Make the most of Open Enrollment with AI 🩺

Plus a look at the White House’s Executive Order on AI

Hey AI Puppies,

Welcome to the fresh feeling of a brand new month šŸ‚Are you ready for the next stage of the fall season?

On top of the chaos of Q4 and the demands of the holidays, there’s another thing getting added to everyone’s plates right about now: Benefits enrollment for 2024

Whether you’re the leader behind the packages or an employee who has to dig through the options, few people would describe this process as easy šŸ™ƒ

In fact:

šŸ‘‰A 2020 MetLife study found that 51% of employees feel their benefits choices are too complex

šŸ‘‰An International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans survey found that only 25% of employers feel extremely confident that their benefits package meets employee needs.

However, benefits enrollment involved a lot of data and a lot of research, making it ripe for improvement with AI.

In this week’s edition of our newsletter, we’re taking a look at:

āœ…Details on President Biden’s Executive Order on AI

āœ…Virgin Pulse, an engagement solution that analyzes employee data to recommend targeted programs

āœ…ChatGPT prompts for understanding your options

Let’s get into it!

What to Know About the Executive Order

AI leaders like Sam Altman of OpenAI have been begging for regulation for quite some time now. They don’t want to wind up in hot water or get blamed for out-of-control usage, making guidance from political leaders a must (at least from a business perspective).

This week, they finally got it – or at least the first rendition of it – in the form of an executive order from The White House. With the goal to improve ā€œAI safety and security,ā€ the order includes:

šŸ”“A requirement that the Department of Commerce ā€œdevelop guidance for content authentication and watermarking to clearly label AI-generated contentā€

šŸ”“A call on the National Institute of Standards and Technology to set standards for extensive ā€œred teamā€ testing before models are launched

šŸ”“A requirement that developers share safety test results for new AI models with the US government if the tests show that the technology could pose a risk to national security

Although many of the requirements won’t be entirely enforceable by law, the hope is that leaders who do follow them will set the standard throughout the industry.

Just for fun, here’s what ChatGPT has to say on the matter:

Cheers to a safer AI future, puppies!

Personalization Powered by AI

On the leadership side of enrollment, folks in this position often struggle to present succinct information that’s actually relevant to each employee. Engagement with benefits is essential, making too much information a major risk!

That’s why Virgin Pulse, an employee health and wellbeing navigation platform, uses AI to deliver personalized benefits experiences.

Here’s how:

🐾When companies invest in Virgin Pulse, they start by merging their employee data with Virgin Pulse’s extensive collection of consumer data (the process is secure, of course)

🐾AI will then take the combined data to predict individual needs with targeted communications, recommendations, and resources for each employee

🐾Over time, the AI algorithm generates quality insights that improve how it delivers personalized communication

Take it from the company itself:

ā€œInnovative health plans, employers, and health systems worldwide rely on us to improve outcomes, reduce costs, and deepen relationships with their populations.ā€

For a roundup of other ways AI can help HR teams manage the pains of open enrollment, check out this LinkedIn article from Tom Daly, an Employee Benefits advisor and technology consultant, which includes ideas like:

šŸ’”Loading documents with company-specific benefits, policies, and more into an AI-powered chatbot

šŸ’”Using AI-powered predictive analytics to predict which packages employees will choose

šŸ’”Creating post-enrollment feedback forms, then analyzing the survey results via AI to improve next year’s enrollment window

Prompts to Choose to Package

Benefits packages are one of those reads that seem skim-able, but risk year-long complications if you misinterpret important details.

Imagine if you could get help unpacking all that information with just a few clicks šŸ¤”

Before our next recommendation, allow us to share this major caveat: generative AI is still capable of hallucination, getting things wrong, and misinterpreting information. For decisions as important as healthcare, you shouldn’t rely on AI to do the decision-making for you.

With that reminder out of the way, here’s something to try this year as you sort through your benefits options:

  1. Head over to your paid version of ChatGPT, which now allows you to upload PDF files

  1. Enter the prompt ā€œI am uploading a PDF with information on a potential health benefits package that I am considering selecting for open enrollment this year through my employer. I am then going to ask you a series of questions to help me understand the pros and cons of selecting this package, and I want you to answer with specific details from the PDF.ā€

  1. Then, ask ChatGPT the questions you don’t want to bug your HR rep about, like what your copays will be for certain specialists and details on pharmaceutical benefits. Remember that ChatGPT can converse, so you can go back and forth and ask follow-up questions.

And please, If any answers seem fishy, be sure to double-check ChatGPT’s responses and ask your HR rep for clarification!

Your Next Assignment

Open enrollment comes for us all, so this week’s assignment should apply to everyone: upload one of your potential choices to ChatGPT and ask it questions Q&A style!
