2024 AI Predictions

Predicting how AI will evolve in 2024 might as well be fortune telling šŸ”®

It’s hard to know where AI is going next week, let alone one year from now.

But we’re surely going to give it a try! To kick us off, we asked AI itself (in this case, Claude) what it thinks:

Like we said, it’s really tough to know 🤦

On the other side of the spectrum, Bill Gates made it a point to incorporate AI into his annual list of New Year predictions. In fact, AI was the first thing listed in his 2024 article:

ā€œWe now have a better sense of what types of jobs AI will be able to do by itself and which ones it will serve as a copilot for. And it’s clearer than ever how AI can be used to improve access to education, mental health, and more. It motivates me to make sure this technology helps reduce—and doesn’t contribute to—the awful inequities we see around the world. I've always been a firm believer in the power of innovation to offer every child an equal chance to survive and thrive. AI is no exception.ā€

He then outlined how thinks ā€œAI is about to supercharge the innovation pipeline,ā€ specifically when it comes to healthcare:

Sounds like a pretty sunny future to us!

Of course, Bill Gates isn’t the only one tracking trends. Here are a few other 2024 predictions that caught our eye:

šŸ‘‰In 2024, AI agents, generated video, and generated music will graduate from quaint to experimental.

According to TechCrunch, AI will have a slower adoption for practical tasks like spreadsheet assistance, ticket buying interfaces, and submitting insurance claims, but will thrive on the creative font:

ā€œIn the hands of skilled creators, a lack of photorealism isn’t a problem, and we’ll see AI video used in fun and interesting ways. Likewise, generative music models will likely make it into a few major productions like games, again where professional musicians can leverage the tools to create an unending soundtrack.ā€

šŸ‘‰In 2024, AI will play a more important role in cybersecurity.

According to BetaNews (and many other cybersecurity reporters), AI will be the only thing that defends us against AI-related cyber security threats. Here’s a quote from Debbit Gordon, founder and CEO of Cloud Range:

ā€œThe cybersecurity landscape will significantly change with more of an emphasis on human-centric defense strategies and advanced technologies. AI and machine learning (ML) will become important in identifying and mitigating threats, which will allow practitioners to focus more on strategic decision-making, creating a level playing field with threat actors.ā€

šŸ‘‰In 2024, more companies will give OpenAI a run for its money

According to Thomas Smith of The Generator, the AI wars will heat up as Google ramps up its AI offerings, specifically with the release of Gemini Ultra sometime next year. This was echoed by the above TechCrunch reporter, who also believes that Apple will jump into the AI game in 2024.

ā€œOf course, OpenAI is not going to be caught falling behind. I predict that they will release GPT-4.5, a more powerful and faster version of GPT-4, in early 2024. We can expect to see GPT-5 later in the year, which is likely to integrate support for video and other multimedia content.ā€

AI Hiring Trends

So where does all of this news leave us, the consumers?

ResumeBuilder released a report surveying 750 business leaders at companies that currently or plan to use AI in 2024.

The results were a mixed bag:

šŸ’¼Although 44% of companies surveyed say AI will lead to layoffs in 2024, 96% of companies hiring in 2024 say candidates will benefit from having AI skills and 83% say AI skills will help current employees retain their jobs. šŸ’¼

So, step one to avoid the ā€˜will AI take my job’ problem is to learn as many AI skills as you can – something you’re already doing! šŸŽ‰

AI will also play a major role in how companies handle recruitment in next year’s job market. According to this Forbes piece, AI will be used for:

šŸ¤Scanning and matching resumes

šŸ¤Predicting candidate success by analyzing historical data

šŸ¤Creating chatbots for initial candidate screenings

The takeaway here is easier said than done: to stay at the top of the job market, mastering and understanding AI will be essential.

AI Policy and Guardrails … So Far

Regulation is famously slow-paced (especially in the United States). That’s given AI leaders and users a lot of freedom so far, but the lack of guardrails won’t last forever.

Here are the biggest AI policy milestones of 2023, according to Time Magazine:

  1. President Biden’s Executive Order on AI: industry insiders were generally content with the guidelines, but the administration can’t go much further without Congressional action.

  2. The U.K. AI Safety Summit: officials from 28 countries signed a declaration acknowledging the risks of AI and secured descriptions of safety policies from AI developers.

  3. The E.U. AI Act: European leaders agreed that ā€œfoundation models trained using a sufficiently large amount of computational power will be defined as systemically important, and will face additional regulation such as transparency and cybersecurity requirements.ā€

As for 2024, Senate leaders announced their intention to pass comprehensive AI legislation before the 2024 presidential election

But we all know how bottlenecked Congress can get, so don’t hold your breath on that one šŸ˜‰

How does this impact you? Unless you’re creating your own AI, you likely won’t need to track policy too closely.

However, any guidance coming from the top could trickle down to your own leadership, so don’t be surprised if your company comes up with new AI policies in 2024.
