Alternatives to ChatGPT 🤖🤜🤛🤖

Will OpenAI always reign supreme?

Hey AI Puppies,

Though creative new AI platforms crop up every day, there’s no denying that the classic chatbot is the easiest and most effective type of AI tool 💬

🤔But is ChatGPT still the best chatbot out there? 🤔

It feels like we’re approaching a future where ChatGPT is as standard as Google.

But some enthusiasts believe that assumption is jumping to conclusions 👀

If you’re in a contrarian kind of mood, this newsletter is for you. We’ve gathered the latest news on ChatGPT’s biggest rivals:

🤖 Anthropic, which claims to beat OpenAI’s GPT-4

🤖 Grok, which proudly became open source (while OpenAI remains closed)

🤖 Gemini, which used to be Bard

🤖 Devin, which may power the future of software engineering

Ready to fine-tune your chatbot training? Let’s get into it ✍️

Anthropic’s Claude Now Ranks Higher Than GPT-4

Lots has changed since checking in on Claude a few months ago. Namely, the release of Claude 3.

According to Anthropic, the company behind the ChatGPT rival….

“The Claude 3 models excel at nuanced content creation, analysis and forecasting, accurate summarization, coding, and scientific queries.”

The release coincided with an update to the membership tiers:

🐾 Claude 3 Opus, which claims to be the ‘most capable model in the world on a wide range of benchmarks.’

🐾 Claude 3 Sonnet, which specializes in high-volume tasks at a rate 2x faster than Claude 2

🐾 Claude 3 Haiku, which blends speed and affordability for a range of enterprise applications.

That’s according to the company.

So what do enthusiasts say?

For the most part, even worshippers of OpenAI’s GPT-4 model (which was once considered the best in the world) place Claude 3 Opus above ChatGPT.

The kudos even extend all the way down to Claude 3 Haiku, which, according to the LMSYS Chatbot Arena Leaderboard, is better than GPT-4:

👉The widely-anticipated release of GPT-5 might be able to top Claude, but we won’t know until it’s out, likely sometime in summer 2024.

By all accounts, OpenAI should be nervous about this 😅

As a refresher, here’s what the interface looks like. It’s almost identical to ChatGPT, but with a more academic aesthetic:

👀If you’ve been looking for a sign to switch sides and join team Claude, this might be it 👀

The Grok Drama

Elon Musk released Grok on X in late 2023 to all Premium X subscribers. Like Snapchat’s AI chat feature, it’s intended more for humor and entertainment than business applications.

Here’s what the chat feature looks like, which you can access on the menu bar of your X account underneath Messages:

Grok’s realistic applications aren’t meant to rival ChatGPT (at least not yet), but Musk did do something to compete directly with OpenAI: he made Grok open source, while OpenGPT remains devoutly closed source.

This came after Musk’s long-time criticism of OpenAI’s closed-source policy, over which he even sued the company.

The debate is a heated one across the tech industry 🫠

Some experts say it’s unsafe to open AI models to the public Pandora’s box-style, while others argue anyone should be able to experiment with the tech.

If you care enough about the debate to be team open source, then perhaps it’s time to transition to Grok 🫡

Google Rebrands Gemini (again)

Remember Google’s Bard? Well, it’s now Gemini, and you can test Gemini Advanced for free for 2 months.

Why consider making the switch? Gemini is multimodal, meaning it processes text, code, images, audio, and video all in one place.

It also incorporates Gemini Ultra 1.0, a model that Google claims is better at complex tasks than ChatGPT:

“In blind evaluations with our third-party raters, Gemini Advanced with Ultra 1.0 is now the most preferred chatbot compared to leading alternatives.”

Here’s the promo showing off Gemini in mobile app form:

Unlike Grok, this can absolutely be deployed at work. For example, Gemini Advanced can:

🐾 Generate images from text prompts

🐾 Compose writing within Gmail and Google Docs

🐾 Use your microphone to chat with Gemini

🐾 Ask Gemini to write, explain, and debug any type of code

If you’re a Google fanatic and want a chatbot that’s already integrated into your G Suite, Gemini might be for you 🪄

For the Coders: Devin, the First AI Software Engineer

All of the above chatbots are jacks of all trades (with the exception of Grok, which is just for fun).

But Cognition Labs just unveiled Devin, the first AI software engineer. According to the company…

“With our advances in long-term reasoning and planning, Devin can plan and execute complex engineering tasks requiring thousands of decisions. Devin can recall relevant context at every step, learn over time, and fix mistakes.”

It also comes with common dev tools including the shell, code editor, and browser within a sandboxed compute environment, and is designed to collaborate with users with real-time progress reports, feedback integration, and an overall collaborative feel 🤖

On the announcement page, you’ll find details on how:

The Cognition team has only released Devin in early access, but you can email [email protected] to get in touch for engineering work 🤝
